If you ever wondered how your website stays live 24/7 and loads quickly, thank the data center team. Their typical day? Well, as Chris says, there isn’t one.
- A Constant Balancing Act: “The first rule is that there is no routine,” Chris says. Their world is one of constant monitoring and troubleshooting—be it an overnight hardware upgrade, an urgent migration, or a mysterious blip in the dashboard.
- Three Buckets of Work:
- Installing new gear: Sometimes to expand capacity, other times to replace aging equipment.
- Upgrading or maintaining existing systems: From firmware updates to operating system tweaks.
- Fixing what breaks: Power supplies fail, RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) need rescuing, or a wayward hard drive suddenly decides to quit.
- Always On Call: The team might start their day with a calm check-in, “If everything goes normally, which is almost never, our tasks start with checking for overnight issues, then prepping for the next big migration later that night,” Chris explains.
